NEW MUSIC:  Roy Wood$ ft. Drake – ‘Drama’

While the song is quite repetitive, I do like it.  The very opening sound reminded me immediately of Drake’s ‘Houstatlantavegas’ from So Far Gone, my favorite Drake mixtape and probably body of work he’s done.  If you’re a Drake fan, you’ll catch the resemblance.  The whole song actually is very Drake-esque with regards to the beat and overall sound.  The track was actually debuted during Drake’s first episode of his OVO Sound Radio show earlier this month.

Now I don’t know much about Roy Wood$ but from some quick research he is another Toronto native and can both rap and sing.  Hmmm, sounds like another Toronto native we know… Drake 🙂  And he’s only 19!  He is the newest signee to OVO Sound.

Listen below – what do you think?

NEW MUSIC: Drake – ‘Back to Back Freestyle’

I mean… just four days after dropping the diss song, ‘Charged Up,’ Drake is back with another track aimed at Weak Mill.  Sorry… Meek Mill.  I woke up to a handful of messages with the link to this song – thank you to those who were looking out!  I immediately played the track at 7:00am while lying in my bed and loved every second of it.

“Trigger fingers turn to Twitter fingers / You gettin’ bodied by a singin’ n***a.” #dead
“You love her then you gotta get a world tour / Is that a world tour or your girl’s tour?”  #reallydead (in reference to Nicki Minaj – Meek Mill is currently on her tour)

This is one of the reasons why I love rap and hip-hop so much.  I believe it’s the truest genre of music – what other genre do you know that has artists go back and forth with essentially real time tracks?  And to think this all started from a Tweet!  Thank you, Meek.  You calling out Drake for having an alleged ‘ghostwriter’ has only made him more of a legend.  How I wish I was going to OVO Fest this weekend!

Serge’s Selections 7.27.15

On Saturday, July 25, Drake dropped three new tracks via the Beats 1 Radio Show (Apple Music – OVO Sound Radio).

‘Charged Up’ | This diss track is in response to Meek Mill accusing Drake of using an alleged ‘ghostwriter.’  Drake hasn’t publicly spoken before this regarding the accusation.  He even brought Nicki into the track!  All I’m going to say is Meek can keep Tweeting and Drake can keep dropping bars 🙂  “Wow, I’m honored that you think this is staged.  I’m flattered man, in fact, I’m amazed.”

‘Hotline Bling’ | Rapping over a sample of D.R.A.M.’s hit ‘Cha Cha,’ Drake debuted the song at his barber’s wedding.  He shows his softer side (not to be unexpected) as he sings to a special lady about late night calls on his cell phone.  “You used to call me on my cell phone.  Late night when you need my love.”

‘Right Hand’ | Over a West Coast beat produced by Vinylz, Drizzy raps about a go-to girl and ensures her she won’t find anyone better.  “You’re my right hand, you’re my go to.  Told me everything about you.  That’s a bold move.”

TWITTER FEUDS

While yes, these online fights are quite ridiculous, especially when it’s between two grown men, I find them fascinating.  I was literally watching Meek Mill Tweet live calling out Drake and the same with Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift.  Now that is reality TV.

The first Twitter feud of the week was between Nicki Minaj and my favorite (jokes) Taylor Swift.  The feud started when music video nominations were announced for the MTV Video Music Awards and Nicki wasn’t nominated for anything.  She began ranting on the social media platform but never directed a Tweet toward anyone in particular.  Cut to Taylor Swift.  Catching wind of Nicki’s Tweets, Taylor responded.  More confusion took place.  Well, we can all sleep now because Taylor issued an apology of misunderstanding to Nicki via Twitter.

Nicki thanked Taylor and shared her appreciation.  All is right in the Twitterspehere.

False.

Nicki’s beau Meek Mill decided to take shots at my boy Drake.  You know I got defensive about this.  He called out Drake for not writing his own raps.  I chuckled at this.

Meek drake diss

And today we received confirmation from Drake’s supposed “ghostwriter” Quentin Miller saying that he is not and never will be a ghostwriter for Drake.  The two have definitely collaborated but Q said he would never take credit for anything other than that.  Drake’s producer, Noah Shebib, known as 40, also took to Twitter to defend the rapper.  Drake stayed silent on the platform.

Do I think he has a ghostwriter?  No.  And I’m not just saying that because I have a healthy obsession with him.  Someone who raps and sings with such emotion and passion can’t do that through someone else’s words.  Yes, I believe he has probably had help or inspiration from others, as most artists do, but that’s part of the creativity and creation process.  At the end of the day, Drake will continue making music the people love, and I will continue figuring out ways of how I can meet him.

THE WEEKND DEBUTS NEW SONG

Earlier this week the Toronto native teased a brand new song during a performance on a private island near London.  Like most Weeknd songs, it was a melodic and moody cut.

His sophomore LP, Beauty Behind the Madness, drops on August 28, and I cannot freakin’ wait.

Listen to the untitled track below.

J.COLE ON REMIX TO JANET JACKSON’S ‘NO SLEEEP’

A few weeks ago Janet Jackson made a musical comeback with her song ‘No Sleeep.’  And no I’m not spelling ‘sleep’ wrong.  The song’s title uses three e’s.  I love the addition of having Cole on the remix – his voice contributes to the cool vibe of the song in a chill way.  While this seems like a random pairing of artists to collaborate on a track, they clearly support each other.  Janet was seen at J.Cole’s LA show on Sunday, July 19 at Staples Center.  Love it!  The visuals for the song are out too.

Watch and enjoy below!

jlo bdayOh, and happy birthday to the girl, J. Lo!  I mean… she’s a smoke show at 46!

Happy National Tequila Day – have a great weekend, yinz.  Hopefully my next post will be about the release of Frank Ocean’s new album…

Obey Your Thirst (Thursday)

This is for all of the Drake fans, those who aren’t fans of Drake, or for those who wonder why I’m so ‘obsessed’ with him.  Aside from his good looks and songs he puts out, the passion behind his work and love he has for his hometown of Toronto is admirable and a big part of why I have taken such a strong liking to him.

“I’m not worried about those other rappers.  I’m not competing with those guys.  I’m worried about the kid that’s sitting in his house that wants to be better than me and all those guys (current rappers).  That’s who I’m competing with.”  -Drake

In conjunction with the Sprite campaign he is currently part of, Drake opens up in a rare interview about his motivation for success.  This is Episode 1, so I’m definitely looking forward to more, assuming there will be.  I encourage all of you to watch it.  It may inspire you to ‘obey your thirst’ for your passion.

DRAKE VENTURES TO THE CPT
100-video-shoot-1On Monday, June 15, rapper The Game was seen in Compton with Drizzy Drake on set of a music video.  The Drake-assisted single ‘100’ is set to appear on Game’s upcoming album The Documentary 2, the sequel to his 2005 debut.  Do know that I almost drove down there, but The Bachelorette and glass of champagne I was casually sipping on wouldn’t let me go.

Check out a behind-the-scenes video below.

DRAKE & NAS IN SPRITE ‘OBEY YOUR VERSE’ COMMERCIAL
I’m about to stalk up on some Sprite.  As part of the pop’s (soda, whatever) inaugural ‘Obey Your Verse’ Lyrical Collection, lyrics from Drake, Nas, Notorious B.I.G., and Rakim will be inscribed on 16 cans that will feature positive and inspirational words from the rappers.

According to Rap-Up.com, ‘the rappers were selected based on their reputation for being true to themselves through their music and advancing the culture.’

drake sprite cansI’m just really in it for the Drake cans, pictured left.

No, but I think is a great way to spread the positivity of rap (it’s not all negative, people) and in a very creative way.

Check out the new commercial below!  You should also check out another one of my favorite commercials by Sprite and yes, featuring Drake.  Check that one here.

SPEAKING OF POSITIVITY…
one man can change the worldBig Sean released the visuals for his third single ‘One Man Can Change the World,’ off of his chart-topping Dark Sky Paradise album.  The song, featuring Kanye West and John Legend, is dedicated to his late grandmother who was one of the first female black captains in World War II.  She later became one of the first black female police officers in Detroit (where Big Sean is from) and served 30 years with the Detroit Public School System as a teacher and counselor.

Sean credits and thanks his grandmother for showing him the importance of hard work, perseverance, commitment, and faith, and with all of that, anything is possible.  In her honor, he also recently launched #ItTakesOne campaign, which promotes random acts of kindness.

I first heard the track when Dark Sky Paradise dropped, and it gave me all the feels.  I think we need a song like this, especially in the hip-hop community, at a time like this.

Watch the video below.

Now off to San Diego for the weekend!

NEW: The Weeknd – ‘Can’t Feel My Face’

What a great Monday!  Today in San Francisco, Apple unveiled its new music streaming service at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a little help from an idol of mine…

drake apple music

…Drake!  He will be using Apple Music to promote his own new album, so you better believe I will be supporting this new streaming service.  And in the above picture, he is high-fiving (real word?) Eddy Cue, head of software and Internet services, after discussing the Connect feature of Apple Music.  To learn more about the service, check out this New York Times article here.  I haven’t done enough research to compare all of the streaming services out there, so I will write another post on that once the proper research is done!  But I have a feeling this might be the cake taker.  Or it could be just because Drake’s involved, but whatevs.  From the few articles I’ve read thus far, Apple Music looks like it could have some real potential and truly engage fans, while still benefiting the artist (and not at $20/month for the fan).  #praise

If that wasn’t exciting enough for me, The Weeknd also came out to world premiere his newest single ‘Can’t Feel My Face.’  Produced by Max Martin, who has also worked with Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift, Abel swoons over a love so strong that he can’t feel his face, metaphorically speaking of course.

I’m totally blowing it with embedding the actual song into this post, so you will just have to click here to listen.  Sorry for the extra step, yinz, but I’m no coder and just want you to listen asap!

And at Drake’s most recent performance at the Governors Ball in NYC on Friday, he made mention during ‘Crew Love’ that an OVO + XO collab could be making a comeback.  Maybe it will drop on Apple Music!  Stay tuned, yinz…oh, and this post is my first post written in Pittsburgh 🙂
